Audrey Buttimer wrote this diary during the period in which her husband, James Michael Buttimer (1925-), was Mayor of the Borough of Hove (May 1988 - May 1989). At this time Audrey Buttimer was a Councillor in her own right in addition to being the Mayoress.
Audrey Buttimer became Mayor in her own right in 1991-1992. Both she and her husband subsequently became Freemen of the City of London.
