Beryl Payne was born in Barnet, Hertfordshire, in 1946. She moved to Brighton as a baby as her grandmother lived in the town. She attended West Lain Grammer School in Falmer, where she wrote the essays listed here.
She went to stay in the Convent of the Holy Cross in Haywards Heath in 1976, for rest and relaxation during a difficult period in her life.
