Diary and letters of Trevor Povey

About this contribution:

Description

A diary entry recounting the events of the night of the great storm on 16 October, 1987 and describing the appearance of Portslade and Lancing on the following day.

Two letters concerning the installation of a hydraulic ram and dam to provide a water supply in Fulking, West Sussex. One letter outlines the terms and conditions of supplying the ram, and outlines how the costs will be shared out; the reply agrees to the terms and acknowledges payment.

Biographical information

Trevor Povey was born in South Portslade and has lived all his life in the Brighton and Hove area. He moved to Wickhurst Rise, Mile Oak, on the 22 December 1976 and still lives at this address (2008). He was staying in the house on the night of the storm. Just before the storm, he bought a book with the intention of keeping a diary, and found that its first use was to record the events of the night and following day. The entry on the storm is the only full entry in the volume, though TP has subsequently kept an occasional diary.

After going to Hove Manor school, TP served in the Armed Forces and then worked for Southdown Motor Services (later Southdown Engineering) in Portslade. He worked in community development in the last years of his career. He has taught local history for over 30 years and is an expert in the history of Portslade.
Mr Bishop and Dr Walter Sorrell were both prominent householders in the village of Fulking, West Sussex.
