Letters and photos related to Emile Louis Bruno Clement (1844-1928), a collector of ethnographic artefacts and natural history specimens from northwest Australia. Also, documents related to the estate of his daughter Emily Minna Clement (1875-1954).
Emile Louis Bruno Clement (1844-1928) was born in Bad Muskau, Germany in 1844 and died in Hove on 4 August 1928. Clement was variously employed as an archaeologist, ethnographer, mining engineer and teacher. Between 1895 and 1900 he made three trips to Western Australia where he worked on archaeological digs on Aboriginal burial sites and later botanical specimens from the same area. He sold many of the Aboriginal artefacts to museums in northern Europe including Brighton Museum.
The daughter of ELBC and his wife, Emily Elizabeth (née Morgan), Emily Minna Clement, known as Cissie, died at 2 Dorothy Road, Hove, Sussex. She was one of four sisters.
According to the Census, in 1901 Emily was working as a bookseller assistant in Lancashire. By 1930 Emily was living with her mother in Rhosmaen Cottage in Hove and she became a Lay Preacher some years before her death in 1954, aged nearly 79. She died intestate and virtually penniless.
