Description

Photocopy of a typed 21 page memoir by Clarence William Thurley (known as Bill Thurley). CWT completed the first draft of his memoir in 1991, and produced a number of revisions, which contained additional material. This version of the memoir is the latest, completed in 1999.

Biographical information

Bill Thurley was born at 32 Stoneham Road, Hove, and spent his entire life in Hove. He attended West Hove School and then Knoll School. After school, he had a number of jobs, including working as a cinema projectionist at various cinemas in Brighton and Hove, before doing his National Service in 1948.

After National Service, he became an apprentice carpenter, and then worked as a traffic warden for about four years. He joined American Express in Brighton in ?1972 and worked there for about 15 years until he was made redundant. In the last few years of his working life, prior to retirement in 1995, he worked part-time at Hove Museum.

He married in Margaret Wilson (born 28 September 1934) in 1967 and they had three children.

The copy of the memoir listed here is to be donated to the East Sussex Record Office. The original memoir remains with the contributor, CWT's wife, Margaret Thurley.
