128 letters written by EWH to HGH whilst the author was en route to, and stationed in, India at the end of the Second World War. EWH was a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers and was promoted to the rank of Captain whilst stationed in India.
The letters are arranged in chronological sequence and most are numbered and written on Armed Forces' air letters complete with Censor stamps. The numbering is erratic in places.
As well as writing of his love and longing for his wife (Hilda), daughter (Janet) and home, Eric also gives much information about India itself: how the local people lived, the flora and fauna, the religion, language and local customs. A number of illustrations are also included showing temples, houses, beetles, an Indian plough and Eric's living quarters. He also discusses personal finances, sending parcels home, army life and sharing a billet. He also responds to Hilda's letters in some detail.
During his time in India, Eric travelled quite extensively on Army business visiting Bombay, Madras, Bangalore, Poona, Calcutta and Assam via long train journeys. He also undertook many smaller trips including Assam to Chittagong. All these journeys are related in some detail in the letters, as is the outward journey by sea from Birkenhead to Bombay.
Also included is an illustrated Christmas air letter, pre-printed and supplied by the Army.
