Letter written by John Fogg to his daughter Sarah Anne Sinden.
At the time the letter was written, Sarah Anne was living at 40 Temple Street, Brighton, which was described as a lodging house. The oldest son, also Alfred Edward (Alfie), was born in 1871 and became the grandfather of the actor Sir Donald Sinden.
The original letter is in the possession of the actor Sir Donald Sinden. He sent the letter to the late Michael Sinden, who was the son of the cousin of Sir Donald Sinden's father. Michael Sinden photographed the letter and returned it. Michael Sinden's wife, Margaret Sinden, contributed the photograph to the Letter in the Attic project.
Also included is a letter from Sir Donald Sinden to Michael Sinden thanking him for making photographs of original family photos and documents.
Sarah Anne Sinden was born in Hull in 1842. She married Alfred Edward Sinden of Hawkhurst and died in Brighton in 1934. In 1886, Sarah had nine children aged between 8 and 20. Alfred was born in 1842 or 1843 and died in Brighton in 1881, leaving Sarah Ann with the youngest just one year old.
The oldest son of SAS, also Alfred Edward (Alfie), was born in 1871 and became the grandfather of the actor Donald Sinden.
The birth date and death date of the author of the letter, John Fogg, are unknown, and have been deduced from the fact that his daughter was born in 1842.

The original letter is in the possession of the actor Donald Sinden. He sent the letter to the late Michael Sinden, who was the son of the cousin of Donald Sinden's father. Michael Sinden photographed the letter and returned it. Michael Sinden's wife contributed the photograph to the Letter in the Attic project.
