These letters were written to Michael Crane (born 1942) by E.P. Newson, the proprietor of the Redcliffe Hotel, Hove. The letters complain that MC was entertaining a 'lady friend' in his room and this led up to his eviction from the Redcliffe Hotel in late December 1968.
MC graduated in 1967 from Leeds University and was doing temporary work in language schools in Brighton at the time of the exchange of letters. After his eviction, he stayed with a friend in Brunswick Terrace, Hove, before going to work for the InLingua School of Languages in Dusseldorf in March, 1969. He worked in Germany for many years, and then returned to work as a schoolmaster in Brighton
