The material relates mainly to the wedding of Francis Price and Cynthia Chase held at the Old Church [St Andrew's], Hove and afterwards at the Grand Hotel, Brighton on 5th August 1939. The memoir extract (written by Francis Price in 1982) covers his life in Brighton from when he arrived in 1938 until he left with his new wife after the outbreak of the Second World War [3 September 1939].

Biographical information

Francis Arthur John Price was born in Coseley, Staffordshire, on 26th April 1913. Having started his working life as a management trainee with the Midland Red bus company, he moved to Brighton in 1938 to work for Southdown Motor Services, initially as an assistant to the Traffic Manager.

Cynthia Jean Lee Price (nee Chase) was born in Southsea, Hampshire, on 15th June 1917 and grew up in the Isle of Wight. She moved to Hove in around 1936/7 with her mother and grandmother following the sudden death of her father. By 1938 she was working in the General Manager's office of Southdown Motor Services.

Francis and Cynthia were married on 5th August 1939 and continued to live in Hove until 1940 when Cynthia moved back to the Midlands for the duration of the War while Francis was deployed to India. They eventually returned to Brighton in 1945 but moved away in 1948 when Francis was offered promotion.
